OBJECTIVES: SPAN 327, Latin-American Civilization and Culture II, is a course designed to give an overview of the most significant historical, political, social, and cultural aspects of Latin America from the middle of the 19th Century to the present.
TEXTBOOK: Latinoamérica: su civilización y su cultura by Eugenio Chang Rodríguez must be purchased.
CLASS SCHEDULE AND ATTENDANCE: SPAN 327 meets three (3) days per week: SPAN 327.001 meets M-W-F, 11:00 - 11:50 a.m. & SPAN 327.002 meets M-W-F, 10:00 - 10:50 a.m. Attendance is an important aspect of this course. It is imperative that absences be kept to a minimum and that students arrive on time for class. Habitual tardiness will not be tolerated. Failing to sign the daily attendance sheet at the beginning of the class period will be counted as an absence. Leaving class early (without prior permission from the instructor) also will be counted as an absence. Students who accumulate three (3) absences will have their final grade reduced by five percent (5%). Students who accumulate four (4) absences will be dropped from the course and will receive a grade of "WA" = "F" for the course. Attendance records will be kept from the first official day of regular classes.
NOTE: All cellular phones must be OFF during the class period. Phone calls and texting during class are strictly forbidden. Also, students should visit the restroom between classes and not interrupt class to go to the restroom.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Oral Presentation: Students will be required to prepare a 10-minute oral presentation about one of the current cultural, social, or political issues in Latin America. Topics will be assigned.
2. Term Paper: A term paper (7-8 pages, including a bibliography, typed and double-spaced) must be submitted on the last day of regular classes (April 24th). Topics will be assigned.
3. Exams: There will be a total of three exams in this course. There will be two exams based on the content of the lectures and readings. Additionally, there will be a 3-hour comprehensive final exam administered at the end of the course. There will be NO MAKE-UPS allowed for any missed exams. Students should refrain from making any travel plans before taking any schedule exam. Failure to take the final exam will result in a course grade of "F" for SPAN 327.
HONOR CODE: Copying, plagiarism, and all other forms of academic cheating will be penalized as a willful violation of the College of Charleston Honor Code.
